Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa has a lot of everything to offer. The driveway up to the main Hall is long and winding, and you can’t help but be impressed by the magnificent architecture of the building itself, when you arrive. The hotel part is modern and very well maintained, and it’s quite unusual for such a historic building to be able to blend so seamlessly with a newer, more functional space, but Rookery does this incredibly well.
Having photographed numerous weddings at Rookery Hall, I’ve put together this definitive guide to help you navigate your photography planning. Capturing Your Preparations
One of the best parts of having your wedding in such a grand hotel, is the sheer number of options for your wedding preparations. Although most of the rooms are quite modern, there are still original features and pockets of light to work with, whilst maintaining the practicality and space needed for getting ready on the big day.
Expert Tips for Your Prep:
Keep the space tidy: Some of the rooms at Rookery are on the bijou side, so if you can have your accessories ready for me to capture (shoes, flowers, jewellery, perfume etc.), with tags removed, that will be really helpful. Any clothes bags and clutter should also be stored away.
Both Party Preparations: I’m more than happy to pop between each wedding party, but please have a timeline in mind, and stick to it, so I can capture both sides without spending lots of time heading to and fro in the endless corridors!
The space by the front doors, with the marble pillars, makes for a stunning backdrop for those last couple of photographs, before you make your way around the corner to the your ceremony… either in the Nantwich Suite or through the building and to the grounds outside.
The walk down the beautiful staircase is always a joy to capture, whether for a reveal with family or your wedding party, or just for taking a moment to appreciate how wonderful your day is going to be.
Ceremonies at Rookery Hall
Whether you choose a grand indoor setting or a gorgeous open-air celebration, this unique venue offers a stunning backdrops for your vows.
Depending on your vision, the venue accommodates both indoor ceremonies and outdoor setups on the manicured lawns:
- Indoor Ceremonies: The indoor ceremony space in the Nantwich Suite boasts high ceilings, and beautiful natural light pouring through large windows. I’ve photographed weddings at Rookery in all seasons, and the ceremonies always have a warm feeling, whilst being light and airy at the same time.
- Outdoor Ceremonies: The outdoor ceremony space at Rookery Hall has magnificent views of the Cheshire countryside. There’s something about the positioning of the grounds in relation to it’s surroundings… largely due to it not being at all overlooked… but the sky always seems massive and super-impressive there!
Once the ceremony begins, I would usually stay as much as possible in one place, so as not to be disruptive in any way. My cameras are completely silent, so there are no clicks or flashes, and I focus my attention on the registrar so you never feel under any pressure from me. At an opportune moment, I will capture different angles of your ceremony, and for outdoor ceremonies this is super easy as there is so much space.
Couple’s Portraits at Rookery Hall
Once the congratulations settle and your guests mingle over drinks, we will take a brief stroll for your couple’s portraits. Because Rookery Hall is set within such expansive grounds, we can easily find gorgeous, private spots without taking you away from your own wedding reception for too long.
Inside the historic house, the striking indoor staircase offers a dramatic, elegant backdrop, regardless of the weather outside. Outside, the main facade of the building offers plenty of scope for those classic, impressive images, with the full hall in the background and the perfectly manicured lawns in front. There is a small lake, surrounded by weeping willows and lots of other greenery, and I have to feature the awe-inspiring natural world in your photos whenever I shoot at Rookery (hence the number of images here that feature trees!).
My goal during this time is to keep things entirely effortless and natural. I won’t ask you to hold any awkward or rigid poses, but I will guide you gently and provide simple direction that encourages you to laugh, talk, and simply enjoy a few quiet minutes together while I quietly document the chemistry between you both.
Reception & Celebration at Rookery Hall
As the afternoon settles into the wedding breakfast and evening celebrations. My focus then shifts to capturing the heart of your party. Whether you choose to hold your speeches right before the meal to let the speakers relax or traditionally keep them for afterward, this part of the day is absolute gold for candid photography. When the wedding breakfast is finished, we can have another short wander around the grounds or head to the incredible staircase to capture a few more couple’s shots. The hotel and its grounds provide a fantastic setting for the rest of the evening, blending indoor charm with a warm, lively atmosphere as your evening guests arrive. Whether I am documenting the cake cutting, the first dance, or those opening songs on the dance floor, my aim is to preserve the authentic energy, laughter, and movement of your celebration.
